Welcome from Program Director

The Graduate Program in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology will prepare you for a professional career in specialized areas of basic biomedical research, and endow you with well-rounded knowledge of cell and molecular biology and genetics through a series of fundamental and advanced graduate courses.

We offer training opportunities in five major disciplines:

Our Graduate Program boasts internationally recognized centers of excellence, state of the art facilities, excellent post graduate career opportunities, and financial support. Students receive a competitive stipend, tuition remission, health coverage, and the possibility for additional awards.

By including laboratory research as a substantial part of your experience, our program trains Ph.D. students to be independent scientist investigators and will prepare you for positions in academic, biotechnology, and government research institutions. As an M.D./Ph.D. student, you will receive training for a successful career as a clinical scientist. Please see the M.D./Ph.D. website for more information.

As a University of Maryland graduate student, you will work with leaders in the field. You may work with any of over 70 well-funded faculty members in internationally recognized training units including the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the Center for Vaccine Development and the Institute for Human Virology.

You'll be working in state-of-the art facilities. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology alone is housed in over 30,000 square feet of space including over 20,000 square feet of laboratories. Much of this space is housed in newly constructed research facilities.

As an independent assessment of program excellence, our Program has been recognized by an award of an NIH Training Grant in Immunity and Infection. This grant supports doctoral student stipends including travel expenses that enable our students to present their findings at scientific meetings.

Graduates have an excellent record of placement following the award of their Ph.D. degree and often continue their research in top academic institutions, biotechnology companies, as well as government research institutions. A number of our graduates hold faculty positions at other academic institutions.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Nicholas Carbonetti, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director
