Research Programs
The Program in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore includes over 70 faculty research scientists, with laboratories located in the Medical School, Dental School, Institute of Human Virology, Institute for Genome Science and the Center of Marine Biotechnology. A wide variety of state-of-the-art techniques are being utilized to investigate a broad range of topics
within this discipline. Molecular and cellular analysis of microbial pathogenesis and host-pathogen interaction is a key component of the program, with studies of bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens. Basic studies are also being applied to vaccine development and testing, particularly at the Center for Vaccine Development in the Medical School. HIV pathogenesis and vaccine development is a focus of study at the Institute of Human Virology. The organization, development and function of innate and adaptive immune responses is another important area of study within the program, with emphasis on T and B lymphocyte development and function, and evolution of the immune response in vertebrates.
Other studies include cancer biology and molecular analysis of mammalian cell function. Many collaborative arrangements between investigators provide students with opportunities to gain research experience in several areas of study within a project.
